World bank refutes Satyam banned from offshoring work

Satyam Computer Services banned from offshoring work with World Bank

Software major Satyam Computer Services has reportedly been banned from doing any off-shore work with the World Bank after forensic expe
rts and bank investigators discovered that spy software was covertly installed on workstations inside the bank’s Washington headquarters, allegedly by one or more contractors from Satyam Computer Services.

According to a FOX News report, apart from Satyam, two IP intrusions have been reported from China, and there have been six intrusions in all.

Investigators say that the software, which operates through a method known as keystroke logging, enabled every character typed on a keyboard to be transmitted to a still-unknown location via the Internet.

Upon its discovery, bank officials shut off the data link between Washington and Chennai, where Satyam has long operated the bank’s sole offshore computer center responsible for all of the bank’s financial and human resources information.

“I want them off the premises now,” World Bank President Robert Zoellick reportedly told his deputies. But at the urging of CIO De Poerck, Satyam employees remained at the bank as recently as October 1 while it engaged in “knowledge transfer” with two new India-based contractors.

Satyam is publicly listed on the New York Stock Exchange and boasts having two billion dollars in sales and more than 150 Fortune 500 companies as clients.

In 2003, Satyam won a lucrative five-year “sole source” contract to design, write and maintain all of the World Bank’s information systems. The contract, which began at $10 million, had grown to over $100 million by 2007. This year, the contract was not renewed. Satyam has declined to comment.

FOX News claims that outsiders have raided the World Bank Group’s computer network, one of the largest repositories of sensitive data about the economies of every nation, repeatedly for more than a year.

It is still not known how much information was stolen. But sources inside the bank confirm that servers in the institution’s highly restricted treasury unit were deeply penetrated with spy software last April. Invaders also had full access to the rest of the bank’s network for nearly a month in June and July.

The crisis comes at an awkward moment for Zoellick, who runs the world’s largest and most influential anti-poverty agency, which doles out $25 billion a year, and whose board represents 185 member nations.

Here is a Bangalore-based software professional who went missing on April 11, later declared dead and returned back now.

A 28-year-old woman who went missing six months ago and was later declared dead mysteriously resurfaced on Friday when she called her parents from Pune and asked them to rescue her.

“Meghna called us up at 4 pm and said, ‘Daddy, I’m in Pune. Please come and take me back home. I’m in trouble.’ When we asked her where she was, she said she was calling from a local phone booth in Pune,” Meghna’s mother, Anjali Subhedar, said.

Meghna’s doctor parents asked her to go to a relative’s house in Pune while her father made arrangements to go to the city and bring her.

But the Meghna that reached her relative’s house was unrecognisable.

“She came here round 5 pm and asked me if I recognised her. She was in a really bad state. He clothes were shabby and her condition was like that of a beggar,” Vinayak Ramkrishna Karker, Meghna’s uncle, who lives in Pune, said.

Meghna, a Bangalore-based software professional, went missing on April 11. She had reportedly called her parents in Korba in Chhatisgarh and informed them that she would be boarding the Gitanjali Express for her hometown the same day.

However, when she did not reach home, her parents filed a missing persons complaint with the Government Railway Police station.

Amitabh Bachchan hospitalised on 66th birthday:Admitted at Mumbai’s Nanavati Hospital

Actor Amitabh Bachchan was taken to Mumbai’s Nanavati Hospital on Saturday afternoon following complaints of stomach pain.

The actor was celebrating his 66th birthday at his residence Pratiksha when he suddenly experienced severe pain, a family source said.

He was rushed to Nanavati Hospital - barely a kilometre away from his residence - in an ambulance and was kept under observation.

Less than an hour later, he was referred to Lilavati Hospital, located five km from there. He will stay in Lilavati for the day, sources say.

The Mumbai Police claim to have busted an important module of the terrorist group Indian Mujahideen which was allegedly involved in blasts across India since 2005.

Mumbai Police Commissioner Hasan Gafoor on Monday announced that with the arrest of a group of suspected Indian Mujahideen members from Karnataka for allegedly placing bombs in Ahmedabad and Surat, the number of people held in connection with the recent terror attacks has risen to 20.

The terror suspects, who were allegedly found with bombs, were reportedly planning blasts during Navratri in Mumbai.

Gafoor said that those arrested include four “top-notch software professionals who had sent the three terror e-mails prior to the blasts”.

Gafoor also alleged that 10 of those arrested were among those who placed explosives in Ahmedabad and Surat. They had travelled from Karnataka to Pune and then to Surat and Ahmedabad, he said. The serial blasts in Ahmedabad July 26 killed 57 people and injured over 100.

The arrested men include Mohammed Mansoor Asghar Peerbhoy, 31, who works as a principal software engineer in a multinational corporation; Mobin Kadir Shaikh, 24, senior technical advisor in an IT firm and Asif Bashiruddin Shaikh, 22, a mechanical engineer.

They were told to send the e-mails minutes before the blasts in Ahmedabad and Delhi, which they did, Gafoor said.
